125th Anniversary Celebrations

In December 2009 the Birmingham Philatelic Society will be celebrating 125 years since its founding in 1884 by Charles J. Phillips. This milestone will be commemorated with a number of special events including an exhibition in the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery, from 12th September 2009 until 9th January, 2010. This exhibition is collaboration between the museum and the Society and will look at the history of the postage stamp and the art of collecting. The majority of the exhibits will be loans from the Society and the City’s Museum and Art Gallery’s world famous Thomas Evans Collection.

The seasons’ programme has been extended to included ten full evening displays, many being given by nationally important collectors. In addition there will be competitions, one board displays, and two auctions, one for charity, during the season.

On November 2nd 2009 as part of the Birmingham and Midland Institute’s Lunchtime Lectures there will be a display entitled “British Pillar Boxes” presented by the Chairman. These lectures are open to the general public and usually attract a lot of interest.

A Celebration Dinner is scheduled for Wednesday 10th February 2010 at the University College, Birmingham where it is planned to have exclusive use of the Atrium Restaurant for the entire evening with special guests.

A number of limited edition souvenirs have been prepared including labels, a set of three postcards and a first day cover. Only 100 sets of cards and First Day Covers are being produced with most being available to Members. It is expected that a small number will be available to the public. A book outlining the early developments in philately and the early years of the Society are in the course of preparation and it is expected to be released during the 2009/10 season; also a book entitled “Postal History, Where Will It End?” a synopsis of a talk given to the Birmingham Philatelic Society by John Scott is available, printed to order only.

The next twelve months will be an exciting and stimulating year designed to mark a significant milestone in the progress of the Society.
