24th February 2007

Please note the venue: St Germain’s Church Hall, Corner of City Road and Portland Road, Edgbaston, Birmingham

Auction Commences at 2 pm.

Tea and Coffee will be provided and
Sandwiches will be available from 12.45 to 1.30

An indication of quality of stamps, postmarks, etc. is based on:
Poor; Fair; Good to Fine; Very fine; Superb.
To save space in descriptions, the term “good to fine” is not used and items should be taken as falling into this category if not shown otherwise.

Normal abbreviations are used, in particular E for Entire, ie a complete cover without contents, and EL a complete cover with contents. ‘Covers’ can include either or both, particularly in mixed lots.

Large quantities and catalogue values for same, may be approximate.
Catalogue prices have not been checked in all cases and, for stamps on cover,
the catalogue price is generally for a stamp on cover.

Filing creases, reasonable soiling, staining and other defects together with trimmed margins or perforations to any stamps on same, consistent with the age of earlier covers, may occur without being picked up in descriptions but any major soiling is described. Defects on modern items are however, noted except if of a minor nature.

To assist you to find lots when viewing, the following codings have been used at the front of each lot number:

A

Albums, Stockbooks, Catalogues or Books

B

L

S

The prices in the last column are the vendor’s assessment of market value. Bidding will start at vendors reserve prices which are mainly one or two bids below the valuation in the catalogue.

Please note that certain items have been grouped together under general headings, eg Cinderella items etc. These have not been cross-referenced in country headings.

See the end of the catalogue for photostats, postal bidding instructions, directions for travelling to the venue and details of our April Charity Auction.

Location of the Venue

The church hall is adjacent to the church, which is by the traffic lights at the junction of City Road and Portland Road, Edgbaston, Birmingham. See back cover page for travel details.

Items from the John Bradnock Collection of Philatelic Books & Journals.

The following 38 lots comprise the remainder of the literature bequeathed to the Society by John Bradnock and which is surplus to the Society’s Library requirements. All lots will be sold without reserve but valuations are considered to be on the low side.

A

An almost complete run of Vols LX to LXVI (Jan 1950 to Dec 1956, except for two issues in 1952) of the ‘PHILATELIC JOURNAL of GB’ which was, amongst others, the ‘Official organ of the Birmingham Philatelic Society’ with reports of the same in most issues. It was published by P L Pemberton whose father was a well-known and respected Birmingham philatelist & dealer, first advertising in October 1862 and who offered for sale a collection of 800 different stamps in 1863! (As recorded in the Jan 1956 issue contained in this lot). This batch concluded the Birmingham Society reports, which ceased when Robson Lowe took over publication of the Journal in January 1957. 26 issues plus 12 additional issues from part volumes which are ignored in cheap valuation.
