The Philatelic Congress
of The Philatelic Congress of Great Britain has maintained an annual
gathering (except for the War years) since its inception in 1909. The third
Philatelic Congress, June 1911, was hosted by the Birmingham Philatelic
Society.
The Third Philatelic Congress
of The date of the above important fixture is now finally
settled, and the time is opportune for a review of the position as we stand
to-day. Strenuous efforts have been made to meet the objections of those who
would prefer the Congress being held immediately after the Coronation, or
some time before Whit Week, rather than in Whit Week, but without success,
and while we regret that everybody's desire as to convenience can not be met,
we trust that now the date is definitely fixed, each and all will combine
right loyally and heartily to make the gathering the success it deserves to
be. Arrangements
are steadily maturing, and the outlook is most promising.
taken from "Stamp Collector" 1911 Four labels were produced for the Congress in
sheets of 12 with black centres, lithographed by Artist
Engraving Co., each in distinct colours:- green, red, pale mauve
and blue, depicting the Birmingham Town Hall in black within a coloured
border.
Also printed was a variety of proofs. Inverted
frames are known in red and brown, centre vignette printed twice in pale
mauve. Blue labels can be found imperf. vertically.
Other items to be found are the imperforate
Birmingham Delivery Co., stamps in pale blue overprinted CONGRESS 1911 Fiscal
and Rail Exchange. A previously unrecorded Delivery Co., stamp is the
one-farthing pale green overprinted PHILATELIC CONGRESS in two lines.
A series of twelve postcards, each with a
black-print of the Congress label above a photographic portrait of one of the
